Chapter 6

THE ranch had been quiet, almost unusually quiet, for the past week.The lighting was wired, set, and working beautifully.If anyone tried to get at the cats, they’d be bathed in light that could be seen from almost anywhere on the ranch.Gordon had somehow wired the lights so that if one was triggered, they all came on.The nightmares Gordon had been having had tapered off, and for the past few nights he’d slept peacefully all night long. And, to Gordon’s relief, no one from the military had shown up at the ranch looking for him.Whatever they had been in town to do, it most likely hadn’t concerned Gordon, because all they’d needed to do was speak with the sheriff and they’d have known exactly where Gordon was.No, everything was quiet, and that was exactly how Mario liked it.Getting out of his lonely bed, Mario dressed and shaved before wandering outside to where he knew he’d find Gordon—watching the colt frolicking in his paddock with his mother.

“You could have stayed in bed a little longer,” Mario said as he approached, but Gordon just shrugged.

“I learned to get up early and can’t seem to stop,” Gordon said without looking away from the colt.“Do you know what Dakota and Wally have planned for him?”

Mario chuckled.“Doesn’t matter.My job comes with a place for two horses.She happens to be one of mine and so is the colt.”As if he knew Mario was talking about him, the colt wandered over, sniffing and looking for treats.Gordon stroked the horse’s nose, and the colt snorted before nuzzling his head to Gordon’s chest.The colt was certainly taken with Gordon.

“What’s the plan for today?”Gordon asked once the colt had moved back toward his mother.

“Finish up your chores in the barn, and then Haven needs help mending some fencing on the east ranges near his house.Some of the posts have weakened and need to be replaced.I also thought that once you were done, we could take a ride to check out some of the cattle in the north range.We can use the ATVs if you like, or take a couple of the horses to see what’s going on,” Mario said.Gordon had proven himself a reasonably capable rider, but they hadn’t had much cause to spend a lot of time riding lately, and Mario was itching to spend some quiet time on the ranges.

“Going by horse would be fine,” Gordon said before pushing away from the paddock fence.“I’ll get started, then.See you at breakfast.”Gordon strode away, and soon Mario heard the sound of a shovel on concrete coming from the barn.He then made his rounds, checking on all the horses and making sure everything was in order. Then he called Haven and arranged for him to pick up Gordon so they could take care of the fences.The other men arrived, and Mario gave them their work for the day according to the plans he and Haven had worked out a few days earlier.He also placed the feed order and ordered other supplies they needed.
